Its not required for them at all.
They use it only to show off.
Same with at least 70% of adult user of cellphone - we actualy do not need it.

I think it completely changes high school life for the worse. Now it's a lot harder for kids to get away with things. Your parents/guardians always have a way to reach you, and if you don't answer your phone then you're punished for that. "My battery was dead!" excuse only works so many times. You may say it's for the better, keeps kids out of trouble, but that's what high school is all about.
On the other hand it's great for emergencies. High school is when kids are learning to drive so it's a good idea to have a cell phone in case of a car accident. If you aren't driving in high school sometimes you miss the bus and need to call for a ride. There's a positive and a negative to everything.

As long as it is used for emergency, not to show off then its ok! I mean who wants to see what phone you got, who cares? You get stuck in the traffic then you might need to call home to say you're ok. Or you see someone hanging of a cliff you might call an abulance.

All cell phones should be shut off during class times. They can be used before and after school, but not during.

some may use it to call for a ride home. and some parents are very strict and want to know where their children are at and what they are doing at all times. so for some, its very important.
