I had a professor tell me that Napolean started it cause he was disgusted by his soldiers using their sleeves as hankies.

Originally they were placed there to keep people from using the sleeve as a handkerchief, Now they are just decoration

really good coats actually had button holes for the buttons...but now, brandnames don't do that because its too expensive for people who don't use them anyways....some are for making the sleeve tighter as well...

If they don't help to provide a tighter fit around the wrists, then they are decorative accessories.

i think that it is not only for style but also for emergency, like if any of the button on the coat gets lost we can use the buttons on wrist of the coat to restitch it. this is wat i am doing.
