There's a famous joke about Sir Arthur Eddington being one of only three people who understood General Relativity (in 1919). I think the other two were Alexandr Friedmann and George LeMaitre. Erwin Freundlich gave Einstein a lot of help, and it's been said that his first wife, Mileva Malic, collaborated with him on GR.

I'm not sure I see what you are asking. If you are referring to contemporaries. Here's a few names; Heisenberg, Max Planck. Pauli, Fermi, Oppenheimer, to name but a few. Nowadays the majority of physicists are walking and talking with him. Same applies to Darwin ,other names same principle.

I think its Sir Isaac Newton who is also called 'Father of Modern Physics' as he has given us important theories like the law of gravitation,law of forces etc. which have been vital in our understanding about the things around us.
