It basically made the deductive argument that:
a) Governments exist for the good of the governed
b) The British Government was no longer good for the Americans, therefore....
c) The Americans had the right to start their own country.
It served as the defining moment in history when the Continental Congresss stopped being British citizens and started being American Citizens (and thus British traitors). It also explained their reasoning for all the other Americans, as well as for possible allies.
