Ok, so I have been told to always lift my feet when going over railroad tracks and to duck when going under the rail bridges. I don't want any stupid answers to this question. I seriously want to know WHY this superstition exists and where it came from. I would like to know I'm at least doing it for a good cause ; )

I agree that those peticular ones might have originated as safety cautions, however there is another superstition that baffels my friends here in Cali, but it was VERY serious in MI to all of my friends when we were kids. Like, walking under a ladder type serious. LOL. We used to hold our breath while passing by a graveyard so to not make the souls that rested there jealous and come after us. *shrug*

There is also another silly thing about kissing your hand and hitting the roof of your car when you go through a yellow light. That is supposed to be for luck, maybe yours is too.

Superstition is depend on one's culture. It is shaped by its culture evolution and derives its form from the ancient wisdom. But it depends, once again. In your case, if you have to lift your feet on railroads maybe its for your safety, try to observe. In my culture, we dont develope it. so....
Personally, superstition is a word we, human doesnt know about what goes beyond our gross reality. There should be something: we dont know. Our ancestors were very brilliant for this kind of reason. Butyeah.... finally always end up like this: when you believe than it might be true or hapens! ( so is believing is a superstition it self or one of human trait?)

I've never heard of it. It sounds like something a little kid in a stroller would do. Perpetuating superstitions is a waste of energy.

It was done to reinforce attention to safety considerations. Not just to create a new mindless habit, but to teach children and others that they were about to be in danger and that this required a higher level of focus in order to keep safe.

Knock on wood.
