The fact that the first gear synchro pops out tells us that he has hot rodded and really dogged this car. You could have other things just waiting to go bad. You should pass on this vehicle. The synchro are actually rings in the transmission that spin into place and match up and allow smooth shifting between gears. There is a reason this car has this problem and it is because it has been abused.

Synchronizers are a component in manual transmissions that synchronize the speeds from one gear to another, allowing the transmission to be shifted without grinding. Because you are looking at a car, the synchros are more than likely the cone and blocker type. Heavy trannys typically use disc and plate type, designed like a small clutch.
To repair this problem you are describing, the tranny will have to be pulled and dismantled in order to get to the synchro that is giving trouble. Not an easy fix. However, if you are mechanically handy, you could yank it yourself and tear it down. However, if you have no experience with transmission work, I would take it to a dealership or reputable transmission shop

The synchro allows you to shift gears with out grinding the gears, it is necessary - one way of getting around this is "double clutching"
1) Press in clutch and take is out of 1st
2) fully let clutch ou with it in neutral
3) slide it gently into 2nd
The synchros are brass items between each gear which keep the timing of the gears correct,

No, it is not worth it usually when ever a transmission is cracked open you will continue to have problems. If you are not willing to buy a brand new transmission don't buy the car. The transmission synchro is a timing device it does a couple of things . It allows you wheels to compensate for each other and allows transmission to keep up with motor rpm

as far as double clutching that is fine if you are driving a rig .if the synchro gear for first is gone that car has been beat. oh and to double clutch you take it out of gear let the clutch out push it back in then shift into gear.

This is NOT a syncro problem - it's a worn out fork and/or shaft. Expect about $1,500 to fix.
