As recently as 9,000 years ago, the southeastern corner of England was still linked to Europe. Before the Germanic tribes (Anglo-Saxons) came, the Iberians came. NO, they were not called 'Britons or 'Celts' at the time. 'Iberian' blood still flows in the blood of the English, more in the Scots, and the most in the Welsh and the Irish. From the seventh to third centuries BCE, the Celtic tribes, originally occupying North-western Germany and the Netherlands were moving across Europe. Wave after wave of Celts (first the Gaels or Goidels - still found in Ireland and Scotland, and secondly the Cymri and Brythons still found in Wales), each entered the island by the lowlands of the south and the east, slaughtered, subdued, or chased not only the Iberians but their own kinsfolk who had preceded them. The Anglo-Saxons came in the year 449 CE, and displaced the Iberians and Celts.

OK, I'll break it down: Great Britain (The British Isles) is the name for the land. This is England, Wales, Scotland and ALL of Ireland (including the little islands around Scotland etc.). Great Britain is the geography term. UK (United Kingdom) is the Political term. The UK consists of England, Wales, Scotland and NORTHERN Ireland. The Republic of Ireland (Southern Ireland) is completely independent which is why they use the Euro as their currency. The Prime Minister has 'power' over the UK, so that is England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Same as the queen... Queen Elizabeth II isn't the queen of Republic of Ireland as they are independent. England is just a country within the United Kingdom. Great Britain is the name for the whole land. United Kingdom is the name for the parts of Great Britain that are ruled by the same government. That's not all 100% accurate in all arguments but that is the basics of it.

the tribe that fought julius caeser to a stand still and pushed the roman army back into the sea was the trinovanti in time of invasion the tibes grouped together and elected one war chief to lead the khymry army .
it is now thought that in some parts of britain the germanic language was spoken even before saxon settlers came here to live ie in pre saxon place names

We know from historical references that at least four waves of Celtic invaders colonized Ireland in pre-Christian times. First, there were the Priteni who settled both Ireland and Britain; next the Euerni, or Belgae, who invaded Ireland from Britain; then the Laginian tribes, who came from Armorica and who may have invaded Ireland and Britain more or less simultaneously; and lastly the Goidels who reached Ireland from northern Iberia and southern Gaul. The earlier invaders were linguistically known as P-Celts; the Goidels alone belonged to the linguistic family of Q-Celts, and their tongue eventually replaced the P-Celtic idiom and became the dominant dialect of Ireland.
Fascinating stuff. I urge you to go to the link and read the full text. It's very informative and well written.

The UK, Scotland and Ireland are all founded by peoples using the ancient land bridge during prehistoric times, hunter gatherers moving from one Isle to the next. These Anglo Saxon people are all related they war with each other still.
