It ruined it. The UK (not just England - you will upset the Scots, Welsh and Northern Irish!) was virtually bankrupt at the end of WW2. Not only was it heavily in debt to the US, it virtually had no gold reserves as said US had wanted it all shipped to to Fort Knox. Whilst there was a pretence that the UK was still a world power and a leading industrial nation during the late 40s and 50s, this was really seeing things through rose-coloured spectacles. Within 25 years the UK had virtually no ship-building industry, no aircraft industry, no cotton or woollen industry. Within 35 years it was not manufacturing any domestic goods, like TVs, washing machines, fridges, but was totally reliant upon imports. What had not been destroyed by the Germans and the debt owed to the US was finally finished off by Margaret Thatcher's governments so that most of our utility companies are in foreign hands, as is what car industry remains and the whole of our steel industry has been sold to an Indian corporation in the past couple of weeks. We now rely of phoney 'invisibles' like guys sitting in city offices shuffling vast sums of electronic money around the world.

The English and the French have been the two nonetheless improving from the horrors of WW1 and the melancholy. Neither factor grew to become into obsessed on retaining the Germans in verify in the process the 30's. whilst Hitler sent militia forces into the Rhineland in 1936 in violation of the Treaty of Versailles and the Locarno Treaties neither England or France did lots of something approximately it. each and each successive bid via Hitler to function territory grew to become into no longer antagonistic via Britain or France previous a frown interior the Germans path. ultimately after Neville Chamberlain grew to become into shown incorrect via the Invasion of Poland via Germany, war grew to become into inevitable.
