In addition, what do you guys think South Africa's chances are of retaining this privilege, bearing in mind the rising concern of our ability to host and crime/ corruption levels in this country?

To answer your first question, I am not sure if any country has ever lost their privilege of hosting a world cup. To answer your second question: There have been talks about SA maybe losing their chance, but it is not true! I personally heard on the radio and saw in the news that they clearly stated that SA will not lose their privilege, no matter what people say and that South Africa are currently further in their preparations for this upcoming world cup than Germany were at this stage of preparation! The world cup soccer is not going anywhere else, and WILL be hosted in SA in 2010! Hope to catch you at a game ;-)

Yes it has. Colombia were to host it in 1986 but FIFA took it away and gave it to Mexico. The reasons were the high crime rate and concern for visitors and that is exactly the same reason South Africa faces as it has now surpassed Colombia in terms of violent crime rates. There are many, many other concerns including Stadia, lack of an acceptable transport system, lack of suitable accommodation and also the standard of football in South Africa. It is also imperative that the host Nation go reasonably far in the Tournament for it to be a success. South Africa are currently rated 85 in the World and many feel they will be an embarrassment.
Try and see it this way. Blatter is most unpopular amongst the leading football Nations and he is up for re-election this year. He is desperate to remain President of FIFA so cut a deal with South Africa that in exchange for the African vote in his favour he would award the 2010 World Cup to them. There is now a proposal on the table at FIFA that the position of President be done away with and replaced by a small decision making body.If that goes through then watch the World Cup move to the US who are on standby. The European Nations who are the leading drivers of football Worldwide are far from impressed to showcase the event in a 3rd World backwater with little or no history in the game.
You should know by the middle of 2007 but the fact that Stadia building has not gone beyong site clearing and the ever increasing cuts in the standards of the Stadia are not in SA's favour. By way of contrast the new Wembley cost more than the entire allocated budget for South Africa's stadia. Whichever way it goes Blatter has played his last card because if there is the normal murder, rape, car jackings etc the whole World will come down on him.

Gunner - About 6 months ago it was reported in the Sydney Herald that FIFA has asked Australia to be on standby. A few weeks later Fox News reported ( citing inside info from FIFA) that Australia could not get it ready in time so the US had been asked because their Stadia were already World Cup compliant. As regards SA's World ranking you need to understand that in Europe their is considerable opposition to having diddy teams in the last 32 when some of the far superior Nations did not qualify because of the tougher standard of qualification. I honestly believe that is one of the failings of many South Africans in that they imagine that Rugby and Cricket are somehow on a par with football. Not even the Olympics are as big as the World Cup and you have not yet grasped the enormity of the 2010 World Cup that you have taken on.

I don't think it has ever been revoked. Mexico has major earthquakes right before the world cup and everything was disrupted, but they still held it there. Fair enough, it was a natural disaster. But think about it, most of the soccer fans are not into fancy schmancy stuff. They are happy to watch the game anywhere and in any conditions.

I do not even think that they will reconsider SA hosting it.

it willtake place in SA. Alf makes fair comment, however just 4-5 months ago every one(alf incl) said it would go to the Ozzies. Now he says USA. the korea/japan games a few yrs ago they were still building work in progrss two weeks before kick off and they still hosted the games and they are not a football nation although they went very far in tournaament and thrashed the big names so what is the big deal about been 1st 5th or 85th

I'm as certain about the world cup being revoked as I was about OJ Simpson getting away with murder.
Not gonna happen. No responsible committee could allow an event of such magnitude to take place in such a dangerous place.
