My partner is going to Japan on a snow boarding holiday and has accomodation in a sort of bed and breakfast type place. I thought he should take a photo book about our country (New Zealand) to give the family that run it as a thankyou gift. Do you think this would be appropriate?

it doesn't matter how much you spend - if you bring a gift, you will ALWAYS get one in return. ALWAYS. It's actually quite a pain in the butt because you're always trying to one up another.

Another thing to give is FOOD items that are regional to New Zealand. I strive to try to find food stuff in the US that they can't get in Japan. It's always great for them to be able to bring out food items to their friends & neighbors and say, "oh...this...it's very special. I got this from a friend from NEW ZEALAND."

A book and some postcards would be a very good gift, Another excellent gift would be a food that your country is well known for, or not available world wide as a great gift.

When I met up with the Wish Club hospitality club in Japan, I brought a picture book of Florida and a handful of postcards from Florida, total cost maybe $15 bucks worth of stuff, it went over extremely well for the group as they each got to take a postcard.

It could be too expensive. Whenever I've given a gift here in Japan I've always received one back of usually about the same price. Some food or candy might be better or maybe some small New Zealand handicraft. I generally don't spend over 2,000 yen (about $16 USD) on a gift.
