I have a lot of games I enjoy playing. I really have a favorite in each genre since it's hard to compare say, a flight sim against a FPS game.

Flight Sim: XWing vs TIE Fighter. One of the best Star Wars games ever made and a challenging flight game too.

First Person Shooter: This is a tough one since they keep coming out with so many of them. My current fave is Unreal Tournament 2004. Awesome graphics even by today's standards and silkysmooth gameplay.

Third Person Action/Adventure: Indiana Jones and the Emperor's Tomb. I love Indy movies and this game does it right with the Buffy the Vampire engine, the music and sound effects from the movies and all the classic Indy moves like brawling and swinging from your whip.

Real Time Strategy Game: Battle for Middle Earth II. I love the Lord of the Rings books and movies so having a compentent RTS that delves into both is great.

Turn Based Strategy Game: Disciples II. It's cool to make your own maps and quests with the easy to use modding system. The in-box senario is good too. Does a great job of emulating the old table-top miniatures and dice games I used to play before the PC versions came out.

Puzzle games: Tetris. Of all the puzzle games I've played the only one I can't stop playing is Tetris. I think I've played it on just about every platform known to man, including my Vcast enabled cell phone and still love it.

Squad Based Tactical Shooter: Toss up between Counter Strike and Star Wars Republic Commando. I love to play CS with other people online or at LAN parties, especially if I have guys I know on my team and we are working together well. RC is a great game to play alone that has such good AI that you feel like you are playing with other humans on your team. The squad commands are easy to give and your squadmates are pretty effective at taking out the bad guys even without your help. Possibly the second best Star Wars game to date.

There are lots of other great games (and some real stinkers too but that's another answer all together.)

For me, it's a toss-up between my "classic favorite" and my "new favorite".
**Classic** -- X-COM - UFO Defense. The first game of the series (Originally titled UFO - Enemy Unknown), this was a very detailed game for the time it came out, and the turn based strategy engine was different than anything I'd ever seen. Colonel Manfred Unger (a randomly generated soldier) will live on in my heart forever, even though he was taken down by a snakeman plasma beam.
**New Skool** -- World of Warcraft (and expansion, Burning Crusade). I don't really need to describe this one, do I? What a great game, although it's been a bit taxing on my social life. My wife will want some affection, and I'll have to be like "Hey! Hold on! I can't pause this!!"
I've got a long list of great games I've played over the years (ultima 7, diablo, the pool of radiance trilogy, etc etc etc) but those 2 are the front runners. Asking me to narrow it down to one would be like asking a mother to choose her favorite child - ain't happening.

Rome: Total War (RTW)

I love how the game combines long-term strategy with real-time strategy. Plus, you can send your armies into battle, then zoom in to see them slaughter their enemies on a more personal level.

I also like the newest addition to the Total War line, Medieval: Total War. It fixes many of the "problems" present in RTW. However, I like the time period of RTW better.

Even better, you can add beautifully created mods like Rome: Total Realism to the game to enhance the already wonderful game.

Gods, I love that game...

I'd have to say Starcraft. I know it's old, but I still find myself playing it regularly. I have tried and tried to keep the Zerg out of our galaxy. I will stop playing when I have accomplished this.

Diablo II. I bought it back in 2001 and still play religiously.
