Anyone can go through a Direct Purchase Plan. Here is a list of companies with plans.

The only way to go direct would be to be an employee and buy company stock.
You can also buy on-line and get lower commission and transaction fees
No company wants to hire personnel to deal with thousands of people and no company wants to buy a seat on the exchange.
You might be able to invest capital in new start ups (seed money) but you won't find blue chip companies dealing with individuals

Fees so low no reason to bother. Drip plans can be annoying to track. Just invest now instead of worrying about trivial expenses.
