It is the use of physical and verbal means to make some other party more compliant with your own position (beliefs needs etc).
Persuasion can take the form of verbal statements and use of language to argue a "case" for something, use of attractive models to coax people into attending things or listening to something that they would not otherwise have done, flirting is a well known and frowned on form of persuasion used by some women, subliminal messages in advertising is another, the nastiest of them all is torture.

It means getting someone to do something they wouldn't normal do on their own, it is a form of manipulation, salesmen use it all the time.
