I heard on the radio today that the death of Anna Nicole Smith has recieved more hours of media attention on TV than the death of President Gerald Ford. Lets compare the two individuals.

Anna Nicole Smith was a Playboy Playmate in the early 90's and had a reality show on the E enertainment cable channel a few years ago. I would estimate that her childhood IQ was somewhere around 85, which would make her "slow". However, after years of drug abuse, I would estimate that her IQ had fallen to around 70, which would make her borderline retarded. Anna Nicole Smith couldn't sing and she couldn't act. In fact, she did not possess any artistic ability of any kind. She possessed little character and no culture. The only positive thing I can say about her was that she was fairly attractive in her late teens and early twenties, but that had faded away by the mid 1990's.

Gerald Ford was a football player at the University of Michigan. He then went and fought bravely in World War II. After the war, he completed law school and became a successful lawyer. He then went into politics and succeeded at that as well. He went on to become the President of the United States, which is arguably the most powerful position in the world. He was not a great or memorable President, but he was not a bad President either. He was a decent President who successfuly guided America through the turbulent times following the Watergate scandal and the end of the Vietnam War.

I never understood how she got famous in the first place. Her life story deserved a "Hm... wierd...", not celebrity status.

The culture is on a downgrade at this time. Anna Nicole Smith has made the US look like a circus to the rest of the world. The fact that she gets more airtime than the death of a president just goes to show you what the Americans value, which sadly, is nothing if it can't be purchased and used for status purposes. I've said this before and I'll say it again.....the next generation of Americans that we turn out are only going to be concerned with the surface value of everything, bigger boobs, bigger house, faster car etc etc. They will have no concern for politics or their neighbour....it is sad..very sad.
Which is why we Canadians have dubbed the US "The Excited States of America"

It tells me that our society -- no, make that, our media -- is obsessed with popular culture, something which Anna Nicole was obviously connected with.

I suspect that's why, right next to any grocery checkout lane, you see racks of magazines full of celebrity news. Sure you may have 2 or 3 devoted to homemaking (AKA women's magazines) maybe the latest issue of Time or Newsweek but the rest of them are largely devoted to entertainment.

And obviously people buy these entertainment magazines and spend a lot of time watching cable channels like E!, MTV, and so on.

I have nothing against Anna Nicole personally, but the media needs to give it a rest, when it comes to her passing.

That kind of media coverage does not only happen in America but all over the world. That is the fault of media and those who are involved in the entertainment industry who are the prime mover of immorality. Their lifestyle (divorce, immediate change of partners, infidelity, indecent dress code etc.) are being monitored by media whose main concern is to gain profit, to sold millions of copies of their reports rather than promote moral and informative information to the youth. Media today is very, very different from media before. Today's culture is more on material thing and media mileage so it is not surprising to see the immorality of the people are giving more media mileage than those who deserve to be given one.
Let us hold hands together to lessen if not to prevent this kind of culture be prevalent among the youth. Thank you.
