It just seems weird that everything else would cost the same but housing is way more.

Oklahoma has a lot of casinos so I was thinking to work in one. I was hoping the lower minimum wage would be made up for.

San Diego has close to the highest gas prices in the country right now. Most things cost a little more than in other areas, but not nearly as much of an increase as housing.

Right now the most expensive piece of property is in New York. It's a Penthouse at Trump Park Ave and it's going for over $6,000.00 per Sq Ft. It's about 5,300 Sq Ft and is being sold for something like $32 million.

Back in 2001, I took a cross country trip, and I found that when in California, just about everything was more expensive than anywhere else in the US.

The thing about moving is you have to remember The Cost of Living Index. Just because you move to Oklahoma and get a job, doesn't mean that you will get the same pay as you would in California. Because it costs so much to live in CA, you get a higher rate of pay than you would say Maine or Florida.

Like in any free market, the cost of housing is determined by supply and demand. The fact of the matter is that a great deal of people want to live in California (high demand), especially near the coast (where property is most expensive because the supply is limited).

Even further inland, there are niche communities with great schools and neighborhoods that attract people. Thousand Oaks is one such community that most people have never heard of. You can check out what real estate prices are like there by visiting this website: http://www.brendaessa.com .

It's not that the cost of living is really that much higher. You can live in Los Angeles County on the cheap if you so desire. It's more that the people here choose to live more expensive lifestyles.

The real cost of living in California is the cost of giving up so many rights when you move there.

They've far fewer freedoms left to their citizens than other states.
