You are having a problem with your terminology. Porcelain is a type of pottery, much like a German Shepard is a type of dog. Ceramics refers to the entire field of claymaking, from clays to glazes, from handmaking to throwing on the wheel. There are, however, several different types of clays in ceramics:
Porcelain
B-Mix
B-Mix w/sand
Soldate
LB Mix
Jamaican
Hawaiin Red...
and many others. The one defining characteristic of porcelain is that it fires WHITE. It is the only clay that does that. The next closest is off-white and that is B-Mix. The others range in colors from light brown to black.
Another important characteristic of porcelain is that it is the smoothest of all the clays. It is more difficult to handle, but the resulting piece is free grittiness. I have used earthenware clay and after the piece is done and glazed, the bottom feels like sandpaper. Not very smooth.
So Porcelain is a type of clay. It is the whitest, smoothest, and most difficult to handle clay. It is also usually more expensive.
