One, some use the media only when necessary. For instance, avoid reading a newspaper you think is too pessimistic for your taste. I don't like this approach because every citizen of the world is not supposed to be unaware of what's happening out there. We just can't bury our heads in the sand, like ostriches do.
Two, some others choose their media. If you check out newspapers in a library, you'd get a feel which ones are balanced: neither the Polyanna- or ivory tower-type, nor the goody two shoes-type, much less the gloomy blue kind. If you check out the TV guide, you'd know which programs and which channels are up to your taste.
Three, some people are intelligent enough to see through what media is projecting. I think more balanced people use their critical faculties better than most, and see that behind every argument, there always lurks a counter-argument. For instance, Democrats bash George W. Bush to no end for his Iraq policy, i.e. refusing to pull out US troops. They may have grounds for doing so, but is it not possible that pulling out US troops immediately would be no better? There are countless possibilities in this policy, and every option has leads.
Four, still some others stick to the facts and refuse to dwell on the opinions of others. They prefer to form their own opinions rather than rely on the opinions of others. Media is an expert in feeding us with the opinions of a few to sway the opinions of all the rest. It would be a pity to fall for such things, knowing that media, unwittingly or not, thrives on the opinions of the ignorant. Just because Paris Hilton or Nicole Richie or the Dixie Chicks think that Guess is a faddish brand doesn't mean it is so.
Lastly, some people choose to dwell on other things. They have their life to live, regardless of what tone the media presents news. There will always be problems on this planet for as long as men and women inhabit it. Some problems can be solved now, some others later, some not at all. But the world will continue to turn, the winds will still blow, and the waves in the ocean will never cease to toss about, on their way to plant a kiss on the seashore's sandy cheeks . . . . . and life goes on - with or without pessimism in the media.

find some blogs that think as you do (i post at awesternheart) you will soon discover that the whole world is not a cesspool and that there are people who feel just as strongly as you do and who will affirm you in your feelings about the world...you will also be able to debate with others who come to the site who believe differently ...i guarantee that this will pick you up ...i've felt just as you do and now i can't wait to 'chat' with like-minded people...it's an incredible feeling ...you may even make IRL friends from close to where you live
