At this point in time, you would have to say Rooney is better.
Leo Messi is young and skillful and what not. heck even Maradona likes him but he is not quite as developed and as much a threat Rooney is. Leo Messi is cute dribling with the ball but he is undersized and has not prove himself enough. Right now Messi is the cherry on a very strong Bracelona team, while Rooney is the foundation of both the Man UTD and England.
And whats the argument with Rooney arguing and his temper. So ROoney does act stupid sometimes and he does look like a monkey from time to time. Well they are not perfect people. Messi dive too ya know, its part of the game its their style. So far Rooney has proven he can take over a game, Messi is still that little boy waiting in the wings.

I gotta go with Rooney. Messi is talented and skillful but Rooney has got the presence to lift his team up. Messi doesnt have that. The leadership quality. This season Rooney lost some form and Messi got injured, but look at last season, it was almost as if single handedly Rooney pushed Man Utd to 2nd even though the rest of the team were below par.
It would give them both a bit more seasons b4 comparing them both again.

I don't see why people think Rooney is so great. He is a very good soccer player but he's not in the same league as world class strikers like Henry and Drogba. Every game I saw of Man U he seems to be shouting at everyone for God knows which reasons and complaining to the ref. That sucks. Messi is still very young, has a lot of individual skill and plays South American style football, which is by far the best.

They are both class acts but on the other hand they both have down sides

Messi - A diving idiot who doesnt know right from wrong
Rooney - Anger is his downfall if he isnt swearing at a ref he is taking someone out

If both these players lose those downfalls they will be brilliant i believe and always have said that messi will be better than maradona. i think rooney has let all the press get to his head so now he thinks he is some sort of god which he aint he is a good player but not brilliant

Why do people ask questions about Rooney?

All you get is idiots talking crap about him.

These people are so bias they don't even rate him.

I wish people could only participate if they actually watched Rooney and Messi play an ENTIRE season.

I haven't watch one domestic game Messi has played. I have, however, watched the last decade of Man Utd and I don't know if I saw a worst team then last years. In addition, I have not seen a player drag his respective team to a decent position in the league like Rooney did last year.

Neither have had standout seasons this year; Rooney due to lack of form, Messi due to injury.

People slag off Rooney like he is a League 1 player, its disgusting.

They are both super talented, but so far it seems Messi has not lived up to his billing, though I think that's largely because of the amount of injuries he takes. But as he gets older and stronger that should change.

Rooney is my favorite right now because he plays for my favorite club team and he can really decimate a defense on his own. This season has not always been the easiest for him but thus far its been good enough.

Lionel Messi any day !!! He's young and hungry for the game ... so of course it's more exciting to watch him play, as he goes all out in each match. Rooney used to be one of the good ones, but he's kinda slipping into complacency at Man Utd, mainly because boys like Cristiano Ronaldo, Louis Saha, Henrik Larsson, Oli Solskjaer & Park are in the spotlight right now. They're carrying the team --> but I have to give it to Sir Alex Ferguson for getting the balance between the old and the new JUST right this time, in order for them to be ripping the Premiership apart this season.
(I'm a GOONER by the way, but I'm just giving credit where it's due)!

Anyways, my answer is Lionel Messi.

Rooney is nothing compared to Messi!
Messi is the one with true talents and that loser Rooney doesn't even know how to play!
