For the past week my back has been hurting and I figured I had herniated a disc. I finally went to the hospital Wednesday morning and ended up having to have emergency surgery. I had one disc herniated and another piece of a disc floating around in my spine. Unfortunatley, it was too late for my foot. I can't move it at all. The doctor recommends physical therapy so that I might eventually be able to walk without a brace. Anyone know any good exercises? I just want to start right away and I can't go to PT for a couple of weeks. Thanks!

First off, who says you can't go to PT right away? Start calling all the clinics in your area, explain your situation, and ask if they can get you in sooner. I can tell you that smaller private practices will work hard to squeeze you in if if is urgent. Do not let your doctor dictate to you where you MUST go for PT. Orders for PT are like a prescription for drugs - the doctor can't pick your pharmacy!

In terms of the foot, take heart. The nerve that provide motor function - the ability to move - just take more time than some other nerves to come around after injury. Get into PT ASAP!
You can go to APTA.org, click on "find a PT", and use this list to help your search.
Good Luck!

Don't do any therapy on your own. Consult the doctor for suggestions.
