There are a few reasons you shoot a basketball with hands. First you need grip on the ball to protect it . Just think if some guy comes and tries to smack the ball out you will have a better grip . Second of all just in case you need to pass the ball if change you mind!!! Not to mention the angle that ball is coming at . The ball will have less air to get there if you shoot at a 90 degree angle . thuys giving ur more momentum and controlled power of the ball.

i would suggest you switching to a more conventional one handed follow through shot if you have goals to make a basketball team such as a high school team in the future..there is no doubt that a one handed follow through is better than shooting with two hands, for it allows you to shoot from deeper distances and has a quicker release.. however, if you just like to play basketball every now and then just for fun, then i say stick with how you shoot.. it takes time, energy, and a lot of practice to change a jump shot..

Ever since the 50's we have been shooting a basketball with ONE hand. (much more accurate) Your other had is just used for balance or control not for shooting.

mostly, one is your shooting/ aiming hand. Mostly thats the hand you use to write with, your more dominate hand, USUALLY. And so the lease dominant hand is for guiding/ to keep it steady. It takes like some odd days to get use to it. An example of a person who doesnt do that is Peja. Peja Stokovic (however u spell it) Shoots very very awkard. But still is a good shooter. So, u dont have to limit yourself to jus one guiding hand and one aiming hand. U could always use both hands to shoot, just its going to take alot of practice. goddluck =)

You only grip the ball on your way up with two hands, but at the release if you look closely, all players push it off with the hand that they are comfortable with, and leave the other hand down.

What do you mean? You shoot one handed, the other hand is there as a guide and to hold it steady

Because if you use only one hand while shooting it is a foul, whereas while dribbling if you use both hands, then its a foul .

With one hand you thrust the ball towards the rim and the other hand keeps the ball steady so the ball doesn't drift to the left or right.
