It isn't right not to hire someone simply because of their name. The findings of the article above disturb me. However, you are being stereotypical by stating that ALL white people think it's okay to be racist. A better way to word your question would have been "Why do some white people think it's okay to be racist?" Obviously, not ALL white people think racism is okay.
I'm white, but I have a name that some might consider "ethnic." My name is Desiree. It's French, but many black people have this name as well. If an employer chose not to hire me based on the ethnicity of my name, so be it. I would not want to work for a company that is more concerned with names than a potential employees skills and performance.

It is an interesting study you found, but first thing first, I believe your question/statement contains incorrect analysis & conclusion:
1. They're not saying that people with black-sounding names do not get HIRED because of their names; they study just shows that people with black-sounding names do not get as many interview offers/call backs.
With this being said, is this a case of discrimination? I wouldn't say yes, but I'd answer it with a "MAYBE". I'd say maybe yes, if the person doing the screening is doing it purposely, but I'd say "No" if it's due to unconscious perception (bias).
Please read this article in return, just to understand the point I'm trying to make here:
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A27067-2005Jan21.html
It's an interesting article about a homosexual female who, after participating in a psychology study, even found herself to be bias AGAINST homosexuals! So, it is not only white people being racist against non-white people, but I just think it just shows how people unconsciously have perception & bias against and/or in favor of different groups of people!!
If you read this next article, which basically is similar to the one you found, it is also said that Asian-sounding names are more likely to be recommended for gifted programs than siblings with common American names and similar test scores:
http://www.newswise.com/articles/view/511720/
2. The study did not say that it was all white people who were doing the resume screening.
Thus, it is not fair to conclude that white people think it's okay to be racist. It could be black and/or Asian people who do the resume screening..don't you think?
If you don't think so, please read your own article & think again! I'd like to re-emphasize one of the results of the study in your article, that has also been posted by the Boss: even the black kids are bias, too..
I believe there are different kinds & forms of discrimination. There is this that you call "name discrimination", which I think is more of a cultural bias or prejudice (discrimination is a strong word; for me, it is strong enough that it sounds more like an accusation), which everybody probably has anyway, whether they're doing it consciously or unconsciously, because that is just how people are, that is just how our society is. For example: when people see an adult female with last name "Jones" taking a 5-year old boy with last name "Jones" to school, they will assume that the woman is the little boy's mother (the woman could be the boy's father's unmarried sister, etc).
Another example: with you being bias that it is ONLY white people who are racist to names (which is NOT even a know fact in this study), do you think you are maybe culturally bias as well, & thus, according to your own conclusion: a racist?

Your question is a bit confusing, but I think what you're trying to say is why do people discriminate against those with a "non-white" name.
I'm sure this is true in some cases, but not with all white people. By saying this, you're just falling into a stereotypical image of white people. It's the same type of thinking that perpetuates other myths of blacks, asians, etc.
You need to do more research and talk to other people in order to see the big picture and not just believe in just one source of news.

I actually did a research paper on this and you're absolutely correct. Minorities are denied jobs because of their ethnic names. Based on the responses from many of the people on this forum it can be concluded that many Caucasians do feel its ok to discriminate. However, there are others who don't. Just be careful with generalizations. You're correct but not all whites feel its ok to racist. Its something we have to deal with and you're right people are naming their children less ethnically for fear of them having even more trouble gaining employment. However, you should keep in mind that what God has for you is for you and no one-not even a RACIST can take it away from you. Thanks for making this info public.

I've heard african americans make fun of so-called "white names" such as Dwight or Don, I've also heard them make from of some african american names,
same with other races
but anything that seems different to someone is open for ridicule from them, depending on the person
I try not to be racist,
and to be fair
if a name seems amuses (from any race, including some "white names" like Candi/Candy or something (no offense if that is your name) then I mean it can be humorous)

What is a "White" name? I think that you are whacked. I am a descendant of the Celts, Norse and Scot's; what name should I have?
Have you ever heard of Affirmative Action? Why is 83% of government officials protected class minorities? Why do manufacturing companies now have over 60% of their workers as minorities? It sure as hel* isn't because they are good workers! Why is it so damn hard to get a job anymore if you are a White man? Affirmative Action, that's why. If I were a minority I would be ashamed that I was considered so inferior to White men that I needed a law ordering the government and companies to hire me instead of White men. But hey, you're probably 13 and know everything cause you're dating an illegal who got busted because he spelled Smith wrong on his forged SS card.

It's impossible to have a "white" name. White is a color. Naturally there is a cultural difference between races. True that names do influence people who are pre-judgmental and Heather will get hired BEFORE Laquisha but there's NOTHING to be done about it. It's all a part of free will in a society riddled with bigotry and misconceptions. Not ALL African descent people have cultural differentiating names and go with the standards. Caucasians set the rules a long time ago and the struggle is still going on to change things.

I have never had much for media articles or poles or whatever! they are biased discriminatory and ignorant ! people who get their education out of the media might as well pack their bags and move on!
but before you do that , I suggest to you , to think before you speak - the reason why white people think it is OK to be a racist is the same reason why black people think it is OK to be a racist! ignorance , freedom to choose , freedom to accept what or whom ever they want ! with out being judged by others like you for example! how racist of you to say WHITE PEOPLE!
how arrogant and discriminatory of you! do you even know me to categorize and accuse me of such things - obviously you have no clue!
are you honestly sooo naive that we can only blame white people ? how racist of you! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Did you see in the article that black children as well as white children preferred the white sounding names better? So does that make black children racist too?
