i know it's normal to have blood clots during your period, but what about in between? for a few days in between my periods i get blood clots. sometimes they are little and sometimes they can be the size of a quarter. other times its just discharge streaked with blood. i've been to the doctor about this and the only thing they found was a heart shaped uterus. no explanation for the bleeding/clots. i have a pap test every year, which has always come back normal. what could it be? it's freaking me out!
oh yeah, i am not pregnant.

Jessica G gave a good answer.
I might add a couple of things.
First, if you're young, you should know that this is probably nothing serious. Chances are, you are having some mid-cycle bleeding/irregular bleeding that is clotting in your vagina before it makes it all the way out.
You've probably already had a physician look inside your vagina and at your cervix, since you said you've had normal pap smears. If that is the case, there's not much need for worry.
If I were your doctor, I'd probably get an ultrasound of your pelvis, just to be sure that everything was normal (and it probably is), and then reassure you that there's nothing to worry about.

I believe you have an irregular menstruation. The menstrual cycle isnt the same for everybody. Some have heavy periods and have trouble holding a tampon in for over an hour, others have light.
Bleeding may be something to worry about if it occurs between periods, after intercourse, or if you are over age 50, especially if you have already gone through menopause. The risk of cancer increases with age.
Often, if you are bleeding from the rectum or there is blood in your urine, you may think the blood is coming from the vagina. To know for certain, insert a tampon into the vagina to confirm that it's the source of your bleeding.
Keep a record of your menstrual cycles, including when menstruation begins and ends, how much flow you have (count numbers of pads and tampons used, noting whether they are soaked), and any other symptoms you experience. Tampons should be changed at least twice a day to avoid infection.
Because aspirin may prolong bleeding, it should be avoided. Ibuprofen is usually more effective than aspirin for relieving menstrual cramps.
Bleeding in the middle of your cycle could mean different things. Some women bleed a little bit when they ovulate, and that is nothing to worry about. Mid-cycle and post-sex bleeding could also indicate that your cervix is unhappy due to some kind of STD like chlamydia or gonorrhea - or even cervical cancer.

It scares me that most women & doctors know so little about their own reproductive cycles... Yeesh. If the bleeding is about 14 days after the first day of your last period, you are probably just ovulating. A small amount of blood is perfectly normal when you ovulate. The blood should be preceded by some cervical fluid that is egg whitey and stretchy. Please check out the book , Taking Charge of Your Fertility, it is an amazing book that can explain a lot. It also has some horror stories about the ignorance of doctors about women's health...
This is all null and void if you are on the pill. It could be break-through bleeding if you are on the pill.

chill.... you are only on THE seemingly endless journey known as THE menstrual nightmare from and into HELL! it will ONLY last for 45 years. or .the better part of your life, making you miserable and bloated and cramped and by the time you hit pre menopause and are hemorrhaging thru 10 Depends undergarments daily for at LEAST 7 days a month for a year or 2, you will have prayed at LEAST 10 times a day that your uterus shrivels up and dies as quickly as possible.... but if you were MY daughter I would waste no time in assisting you in getting another opinion of preferably a woman gynecologist

Since your doctor didn't find fibroid tumors or any other problem, I can't answer your question.
If it persist I would see another doctor. We know it isn't normal to do that.
