Hi. depends on the car. A Honda Civic may sound louder with a so-called 'fart pipe' but you would need a larger engine like a 5.0 and some Flowmasters to REALLY sound better and stronger.

In my opinion, nothing sounds more powerful than a really quiet car. Any competent engineer will agree that noise = inefficiency. Loud cars just sound like vanity - nobody really takes it seriously, and it is obnoxious. Inexpensive ways? Keep it maintained, over the long term you will save.

if you want it to sound louder and deeper during high RPMs, get an intake system off of ebay for about 40 bucks, lower RPMs you can get a cherry bomb muffler out at a pepboys for like 20-25 dollars, you would need to weld on the muffler, but that isn't too hard as long as you have access to a welding kit

Removing your muffler might cause it to make larger sounds, or so I've heard

How good is your stereo. Just record the sound of a real car and blast it on your stereo.
