What is the easiest way to send money from Japan to the USA (California)?

Its a small amount only (about $300) I want my friend to buy an item (available only in the US) for me so I'm sending her the amount. I have a Paypal account but sometimes, it turns complicated. Is there an easier way?

Easiest and cheapest way to send a small amount is you buy American Express or VISA travelers cheque of USD300. Write name of the receiver on "payable to" section, sign it and airmail to him/her.

You could try Western Union. I am not sure what the cost is?
You might stop by large bank, maybe they could give you a certified check in US dollars you could mail to the US.
