My friend is DM'ing a campaign an' he's also a huge Castlevania fan.
As such, he's come up with a Epic-level vampire named Dracula as his campaign's "Big Boss"... An' what's Castlevania without a fight against the Grim Reaper, right?
Anywho, I believe there's already a monster based off of the Reaper, but neither of us know much about it, so I'm just makin' my own "Grim Reaper"... Which, finally, brings me to my question...
What should his... it's... type be?
At first I was thinkin' Undead, but after thinking about it for a bit, I'm not sure Undead would really fit... I mean, the Reaper was never really "alive" to begin with. So, then, I thought maybe an Outsider type... But I'm not sure.

I'd probably go with outsider.
You're right about undead not seeming to fit. If you have deities and demigods, make him a minor deity or demigod. Which would make him an outsider by default anyhow.

OK, I've dug out my D&D books and a back issue of Dungeon, and I think I have a couple general suggestions for you:

1) Dungeon 129 (12/2005) has nice article about taking existing monster stats...doing minor changes (along with the name) and you have a new critter. If you get a chance, check it out. This would be the easiest solution, unless you locate an existing stat block.

2) In the MM 2, they have a couple things that may help you out. I think the Deathknight template on Pg. 207 would fit nicely. A different approach is the Monster of Legend on Pg. 213. I prefer for creating custom critters for special encounters so this is the way I would go. Hey, ya gotta keep the PC's on their toes.

I hear what you're saying about the undead thing, but I'd still be partial to making him undead, even if you augment the undead template.

Good luck.

Personally I'd dig out a copy one of the Diety books and check that. Just chose a death deity that's close and go with that.

I'd think about making a Death Knight or other really powerful outsider possing as deaththough...
