You're forcing a large section of the country who does not speak English to give up their culture to assimilate (some might see that as a con). Also, those who cannot speak English are excluded from major parts of society (they can't read road signs, can't vote because they can't read the language, can't participate in a lot of things).

Also, the Constitution never clearly states that the United States will have a national language. Some States are passing English-Only laws. Arizona is one, I think.

Also, our nation was founded on immigrants and that we offer opportunities that other countries don't have. By making it law that we speak only English, some immigrants could be disuaded from coming.

I BSed a lot of these, but I'm sure you could find more if you just googled it and looke around a little.

One of the pros would be that it would help questions like yours be more understandable.

One of the cons with English generally is that it is a very difficult language to learn to use well. However, it is gaining in popularity around the world, especially in scientific circles, because English has more words than any other language - which means it can be used with the greatest precision.

Having only one language means you lose the chartacteristics of other languages - French, with its wonderful sound, Italian which is the easiest language to sing, German with the verbs at the end - each has its own charm.

Why start now? First generation immigrants have always spoken their native tongue, and we never made "English only" laws before. Involvement in political life will bring other speakers to learn what they need to learn, let everyone speak what they are comfortable with at home. We don't have a punishment for people who speak english really badly, why for other languages.

Cons: 1. loss of cultural diversity, and language is basically the embodiment of culture. 2. Disrespectful to others, aren't we trying to promote tolerence in this marvellous melting pot?

We are now a global economy. Every other country teaches and requires multiple languages in its curriculum. The United States needs to follow suite to maintain its position as a global economic leader.
