If only an external force can change the momentum of the center of mass of an object, how can the internal force of the engine acclerate fa car?

By applying (through the drive train) a force against the ground and remembering Newtons 3'rd Law of Motion.

It can't accelerate anything without the tires getting that external push from the friction on the ground from the Earth.
