INCULCATE
Deep
Inside of you
You have wonderful ideas
But something in you also is worried
That people might not understand them
What you have to realize today is that
How your ideas are received is irrelevant
The only thing that matters is that
You get your thoughts out into the world
Today –
- People should know
About what you are seeing
When you close your eyes
Draw
Paint
Sketch
Or even just describe
What it is that you want
Someone will appreciate it
That's more acceptable
Speak from the heart
Get creative

Art is like golf. It's you against yourself.
Forget everyone else, and just work toward your personal best. You already know that it all comes down to practice, so carry a little sketchbook around with you at all times, and use it. Draw everything you see, at every available opportunity. Go somewhere public, like a mall or a park, and sketch the people who walk by. Draw buildings. Draw the trees outside your window. Fill the sketchbook, set it aside, and start a new one. Fill that one, too, and start another. When some time has past, go back and look at the old books. Make note of what you did well, what you liked, what needs improvement, and what just didn't work. Remember, this is all about you, what your ability is, and where you want it to be.
I assume that what you mean by "better" is "more realistic". There is an issue of visualization, a divide between how we understand what things are, and how they actually appear. Think of the art of ancient Egypt, with the sideways people. By their understanding, a person had two arms, two legs, ten fingers - and they had to depict every single one. Think of a table drawn by a child, a rectangle with four lines coming out of it, which would be the top and the legs. This is an iconography, the depiction of the idea of a table. To see the table as it actually appears, the top is a thin, irregular shame, and maybe only three of the legs are actually visible.
One way to help the mind see things as they actually appear is to draw from an upside-down photograph. Another is to draw in continuous contours- without ever lifting the pencil from the paper, trace the shapes that edges make, the edge of a coffee cup against the air, the edge of the rim against the inside of the cup, all the edges of the curved handle. Just keep moving the pencil and never pick it up. For an extra challenge, don't look at the paper. Keep your eyes on the edges and make the pencil follow where your eyes go. These are just for practice, and they won't be masterpieces, so you might not want to show them off to your critics. But, they will help train your eyes, your hands, and your mind.
I hope some of this helps.
Keep at it!

Look at artists you consider better than yourself as a source of inspiration. Consider what you really like or don't like about their drawings and learn from that- not what other people think is good! For example the average person equates photograph like perfection with good drawing, but that isn't necessarily the case. Many of the best drawings are more expressive and interpretive. If you find what inspires you, and keep practicing, you will develop your own style. Try other media such as painting as well if you're not already doing that.
Oh and don't hang around people who gloat, they're just annoying. Usually true artists will want to help others.

Okay, first of all; There is no better.Whatever you draw or paint,if it means anything to you, and if YOU are satisfied with it,then it is good.Artists shouldnt be Art Critics, simply.Everybody has a different way of expressing themselves;it can be the texture of the painting, the color, the emotion you put to it,it's depth, even if it's just a couple of Geometric shapes. These Geometric shapes is art!And it means something!Copying a drawing from a book to look exactly like it is not only somebody else's drawing and meaning and not yours, but it is not your creation!Look at what Dan flavin and Carle Andre. What do these mean paint in thier canvas?A big red streak on black background?Do you think that is not art?or good?Because it is,at least with 90% of the Art world sees it.There create MINIMALISM!Minimal art is characterized by its simplicity in both form and content, where personal expression is removed in order to achieve this. The intention of minimalist artists is to allow the audience to view a composition more intensely because the distractions of theme etc. have been removed! So if you call it art, then it is,as long as you are not trying to be like someone else and hiding your TRUE artistic sense under a visage of what other people think or want you to draw.
I hope this helped.Again;Artists shouldnt be Art CRITICS!

Do your best to ignore the gloating. Beyond that, befriend one of these "better" artists and ask them to help you in your work. Get a sketchbook and practice in it. Don't show it to any of them.

i hate it when people gloat, i would never ever gloat because i dont like it when it happends to me. if you are really good your work should speak for you . usually if someone is gloating they are unsure of there art an have to speak for it.... i usually put people in there place if they start gloating about drawing, everybody has room for learning

Practice, practice, .....
anyways art is not about who draws the best. what you express trough art no one else can do it. you are unique and everyone is different.
maybe your parents did a bad job, because jealously is such a bad defect in people.

There are numerous people who would make fun of the prospect of changing their destinies. This is because it believes that nobody gets more that exactly what is written in his destiny.

everyone draws/paints/whatevers differently. if you start drawing with the thought that someone else does it better, you won't do your best work
