They will sit down to a meal, maybe take one bite and leave. I just saw a woman prepare a pot of tea, pour two cups and the characters just chatted without ever drinking the tea.

Because eating or drinking can mess up the actors, they're not very good at thinking about their lines/cues while eating.

1. In TV there are multiple "takes" so they can edit the final product down... get reaction shots... get multiple punchlines... food sits and sits... nobody wants to eat it.
2. If you EAT the food then need to re-shoot the scene then you have to get NEW FOOD that looks just like the OLD FOOD so there will be continuity.
3. It is hard to understand actors with food in their mouths.
4. Skinny actresses don't want to eat.
5. Lastly a lot of food on TV is not real, just props... so you can't eat it.

If they ate everything they made they would end up looking like Mr Blobby or the Michellin man of old. We are lead to believe that the food prepared is eaten by the technicians filming the shows.

Because it isn't attractive to watch your favorite TV or movie stars eat...not too mention the fact that they still have to speak their lines and that's a bit difficult with a mouth stuffed with food, don't ya think?
