An unconditioned response is a behavior that is elicted by a stimulus without any conditioning. Examples include:

Knee kick when the knee is tapped with a rubber mallet. (This is a kind of UR known as a reflex).

Eye blink when air is blown in the eye.

Startle response when one hears a loud noise.

The UR is the BEHAVIOR that follows the stimulus. The stimulus in these cases would be the tap by the mallet, the puff or air and the loud noise.

In behavior analysis, we commonly refer to behaviors as responses since there is always a relationship to an environmental stimulus.

An unconditioned response, is a natural response. Like in Pavlov's dog experiments. When he put food in front of a dog, the dog started to salivate. The salivation is an unconditioned response because it naturally happens and is not trained or taught. The dog naturally salivates because it evolved that way, not because it was taught.
