Your options depend on how much time and money you want to spend on keeping your PC clean.
If you are interested enough in computers to manually scan your PC every week you don't have to spend a cent. Just install AVG free antivirus, Zone Alarm, Spybot-Search & Destroy and AdAware. Keep them all up to date and have each of the scanners analyze your computer at least once a week and you should be totally safe.
If you don't want to have to mess with your security stuff, you can avoid the hassle by purchasing a security suite such as MacAfee or Norton Internet Security. They will do everything for you automatically.

I don't use either one of those progs but I would suggest Comodo Firewall and AVG Anti-virus free edition for virus protection.
These are a couple of the best programs out there and even better they are free!

Any one with a "real time" active on line watchdog function that can't be turned off or disabled by anything or anyone other than the user/owner. Thieves know that they can't get past the security, so they first try to get rid of it somehow! Common Anti Virus community! Where have you been on this one!

Kaspersky internet security is the best antivirus/antispam/anti-spyware/firewall available today
as far as PC Cillin in concerned it is moderate in terms of virus dete ction and zone alarm is a decent firewall.
i wud recommend:
Avast Home edition(free antivirus)
Kaspersky (paid Antivirus)
Zone Alarm(free firewall)
Comodo firewall(paid firewall)

Avast home edition is a free and simple anti-virus software which is light on system resources. It is also non intruding. It is free for personal use.
Yahoo! toolbar with anti-spy software built in, is also free.
I think these two would be sufficient for a home or personal system.
