Your last paragraph is probably very close to the truth. Natural selection works not by favouring individuals (we all die one day), but genetic patterns, because it is genes that are passed on from generation to generation, not individuals.
In a species with complex patterns of social interaction, natural selection "chooses" a diversity of genetic patterns: optimum survival is best served by having a variety of types of people in a community, not a single "ideal" reproducer type.
Check out the concept of "kin selection" for a more scientific explanation of this.

I don't think that anything like homosexuality that has been around so long serves no function on the evolutionary scale. It must be a fairly important function to have survived. It seems unlikely that it has anything to do with reproduction...But in my idea it has more to do with the constant sexual abilities of humans...unlike some other animals who only come into season occasionally. Perhaps it is necessary to retain such a long and continuous sexual interest for years. The average person is sexually aware for decades...This may just be that the human species is covering all its bases by covering the whole spectrum. Not all copulations in straight animals or humans result in pregnancies either. I don't have a fully formed theory --just some ideas of why homosexuality is important to the survival of the human species.
Because evolution is always adjusting to the past...always adjusting to what conditions are now....it may be that it is adapting to a unit that is quite unlike our modern notion of 'family'.
Perhaps we are necessary for the continued survival of the human race in other areas as well. An interesting question.

If you are saying that it is hereditary... then there are dominant and recessive genes. What about if 2 straight people get married, one of them has a recessive gene and they have 4 children. One could possibly come out gay if they have that gene...
this is just to answer on how it's being passed on.
i don't have feelings either way.... i have gay friends, and i am ok with it.
i also know a couple people that were married for over 20 years and left their wives for men.
i also think there are some people that are bi and simply fall in love with the person.

The third paragraph of your question is very good.Population growth is directly related to food production and infrastructure. When food was plentiful it allowed for the development of cities.People had more time for other things including sexual behavior. There is no hard evidence that our nomadic ancestors had homosexuals and it is reasonable to assume that homosexual behavior did occur sporadically but not as much in later times. The dense population of cities increased the rate of sexual variation because of much more contact. Those who were predisposed homosexuals had a greater opportunity in cities as they do today. It is possible that homosexual activity could have slowed the rate of population but rate of population growth can be caused by other factors, disease drought and war.Modern Western societies have a much lower rate of disease and drought because of advanced technology. When stress is lowered population increases.A good example is the baby boomers born after WW2.The nature vs nurture debate about the causes of homosexuality remains unresolved.More studies of other cultures is necessary to help us find more answers about the causes of homosexuality as well as biological studies.

Nature just makes some people gay and some people heterosexual. Being gay is NOT a choice. You people who aren't even gay should shut your cake hole. A choice is when you make a conscious decision after considering options. Being gay simply doesn't work that way. You are born gay or not. It's that SIMPLE and I'm sick of hearing from those of you who know nothing about it.

It probably has to do with the amount of hormones a baby gets when they are growing in their mom. If a female gets a high amount of testosterone, then she will most likely act more masculine when she gets older (possibly be gay).... If a male gets exposed to high amounts of estrogen, then he might act more feminine when he gets older (and possibly have a higher chance of being gay).....
I'm not saying this is absolutely true....
I know plenty of masculine girls who aren't gay and plenty of feminine guys who aren't gay....
It just seems that the more hormones they are exposed to in their mom, the higher the CHANCE is of being gay.

Maybe you're right; overpopulation could have contributed to it. Hmm, it might just be an "abnormality" that is harmless though I don't like calling it such because it makes gays sound like defects, which of course they aren't; they oftentimes are sweeter than straights.

*shrugs* It could be a way to control the world's population. But I doubt it. Why do you feel the need to question everything? How come you just cant say **** it and just go with the flow?

The point is: You think you know God, but just when you think you got Him all figured out, he changes something! With all the male domination in the world, maybe this is a balancing act?
