....or what if they used modern computer enhancing techniques to improve the special effects - do you think either should be considered? Is it such a classic that it should never be touched (or remade) or should we use modern techniques to "make it better"?

No one should ever touch this classic! The special effects could certainly be CG'd but to what end? Would/could this improve the end result? How do you improve on the perfect childhood experience?

Believe it or not I was just thinking about this the other day. It might be difficult and disappointing to remake the classic. It would be hard to recast those lovable characters. (case in point willey wonka and the chocolate factory really lost something in the remake)

But wouldn’t it be great if it could be done in today’s computer animation something like the movie Polar Express, I think it would reach a whole new generation of people. There is a lot of beauty in the original that could improved upon.

Forget about this movie. Film the book. The best Wizard of Oz film I've seen was an '80s anime. The girl who played Annie in the 80s movie does Dorothy's voice. There were two of them. Even the bad one I enjoyed more than this. There was too many changes. I hate the ending. Oz supposed to be real.

I miss the silver slippers and the trip to see Glinda who wasn't even introduced to the second to last chapter. I miss the kalidahs too. I'm a purist for the story. I don't care if anybody disagrees. The 1939 film was sugarcoated.

It already has been remade many, many times in various forms, but never a pure remake like every movie today is. I hate ALL remakes, personally, but I don't think anyone would ever have the stones to remake the classics. I think a Wizard of Oz remake would bomb completely, for many reasons.

The original is fine like it is. Did you see the colorized version of Night of the Living Dead? The original B/W is sooo much better and effective. Personally, I like the classics just as they are.

By the way, in The Wiz (1978), Dianna Ross played Dorothy and Michael Jackson played the scarecrow.

The original will always be the original, and it shouldn't be touched.

But what would be cool is if they made a new one and made Wicked a movie too, and sold them together. I'd be happy to play Dorothy & wear the ruby slippers! But I truly think that the old actors & actresses, music, and overall quality can't be replaced or redone again.

Hey, thanks for the idea! Maybe I'll try writing a script for a new one! ;)

I don't think it should be remade. One of the great things about the Wizard of Oz is the old (new back then) technicolor.

I think it should be remade.Fantasy movies are very hot right now.You would definately have to have a great director and cast.If they do remake it I would love to see Kenneth Branagh play the part of the lion.He played Professor Lockhart in Harry Potter chamber of secrets.

I think it's fine the way it is, it's a classic, and anybody who touches it is just asking for trouble. I wouldn't go see it if they redid it... I mean I know the effects and everything aren't great, but it's just better that way, it just wouldn't be the same!

They would probably add a bunch of violence and spinning side-kicks and all this other stuff. It was a real classic, like the latest Willy Wonka, used cloned images in stead of multiple oompah loompahs, etc.
