Is it possible to use a security camera in place of a webcam, or is it programmed to do the same thing?

That would depend on the Make & Model of the camera.

Need more detailed info about the camera

security cameras and web cams run off different hardware standards.

Webcams are typically USB based nowdays.
Typical Security cameras are coax cabled or otherwise (CCTV are a different standard, I forget what it is)

So to set up a security camera on your system you would have to have a capture card like the ones made by Geovision. However, there are newer technologies within webcams (Look for keywords "Network camera") that allow you to IP enable them to work like a security camera without the extra hardware. I've not had a lot of practice with these, but it most definitely will involve proprietary software from the manufacturer of the camera. Creative is starting to jump on the bandwagon with this, and Panasonic has a few models out there too.

It all about the software you use with the Security Camera. You would need to get software that would work with the program you are using. I know a place that sells great security cameras at the lowest price around. Check them out.
