I think that as a parent if my daughter really wanted to do something like that, and told me about it, I wouldn't laugh or say she was crazy. I'm sorry your family makes you feel like this goal is unreachable. But it might be a good thing too, because if you get mad enough you just might have the passion that it takes to become an actress. You are correct though, you aren't going to be discovered there in your small town, you are going to need to eventually get to either NYC or LA. You may have to wait a lot of tables and work in jobs that aren't very glamorous to live in the city and try your luck at acting. But if you really want to, do whatever you can to learn now, by being in drama classes in high school. Be in plays in your community theater. do everything you can to make your dreams become reality.

You should be able to pursue theater in your school. If you can, try to get into theater classes. Read plays, study parts, and try out whenever there's a casting call.

Doing theater is not much different from any other extracurricular activity. It will take time after school and some weekends. You will need to balance your studies with practice times (practices can be a great time to get homework done, during scenes you're not needed). If you take up theater and drop everything else, your parents may not allow you to continue. You will also have to figure out the transportation situation (if you are at the theater late and miss the bus that usually takes you home, for instance).

Finally, don't be a diva!
Don't be mad if you are cast in a role you didn't want. There is always someone else who didn't even make the cut at all. Take every role as a challenge. Even if you land the lead role, you can't act like you are better than anyone else, or deserve preferential treatment. Even if you are the best in your theater, there is always room for improvement. Acting like a diva only breeds resentment in those around you.

If it is something you really want to do, you can find a way to make it happen.

Break a leg!

You should start waiting tables now to prepare for your acting career. That is what the majority of actors end up doing when their acting career doesn't take off.
A successful acting career is not impossible but it is improbable. The odds are very low. But... it does happen. There is talent everywhere. The best talent never makes it on stage. The reason is because it takes so much work and sacrifice. The drive and dedication needed for success is incredible.
If you have the drive necessary, this little family issue will hardly be a bump in the road. If their laughter upsets your apple cart too much, you could never make it "in the business".
I suggest you soften your approach a bit. Instead of wanting to be "an actress" as a career, say you merely want to act.
There are many stage opportunities even in small towns. Most places have talent contests and church plays and local Barnstormer troupes. Look around. You may be surprised.

Amanda, I grew up in a small town with nothing and my only dream was to act. I went to college as a Theatre major on financial aid because my family wasn't wealthy. If you go this route learn as many technical skills as you can. There is more work behind the scene than in front of it, and the key is to survive between acting jobs. I would suggest majoring in Film Studies if possible because there is more work in film than theater.

The first thing is to learn the craft of acting and that means schooling. It doesn't have to be college, but beware of the scam artists. Never take classes from someone claiming to be an agent. Legitimate agents NEVER charge you money until after they have gotten you work. Legitimate agents are also intrested in ALL types of people of ALL ages.

It's a good idea to see if you can get work locally doing comercials. This will give you some kind of portfolio. Then after you've gained a little experience you will want to move to a city where there is acting work. Typically NewYork or LA. If you live in the south Orlando,FL or Wilmington NC can work as well. Again learn as many skills as you can. I've been getting an acting job about twice a decade, but I've been working steady as a writer. Good luck to you and remember the fastest way to failure is to never try.

Most kids want to be an actor/actress. Very few make it. That is why the family laugh. But some famous actresses had their family laugh at them, yet still made it. And that it also why you get actor families, i.e. the Mills, because they understand it is possible.
Do you go to Amateur Dramatic associations? Good place to start. Then you need living arts at college - at the least. You probably need to go to Radar to stand a decent chance. But the more contact you have with the acting community, the more likely someone is to notice you if you are any good, and you will pick up tips from there.
Best of luck with it. If that's your dream, then don't let anyone spoil it for you. Put me down for a signed photo when you make it!

Don't let anyone dissuade you from your dream. If you want it, need it bad enough, you'll move to New York or Los Angeles, and start visiting agents, and going on "cattle calls." You'll pay your dues the hard way like most other successful actors have done, and then, if you have talent, get the right breaks, you'll make a living at it, and maybe you'll even become a "star."

Life is short and precious. GO FOR IT NOW!

If you don't at least try your best, twenty years from now you'll regret it.

Best wishes.

Well, being an actress is a very, very, very, very, VERY. hard thing to do. Only 1 in like, 100 make it to stardom and they sacrifice alot for it. But if it's your dream, go for it. Start by taking drama classes and go to drama camps over the summer, and try out for a lot of plays. and when your older, go to an drama college. Show your parents that you are serious about this, and be very happy when you are taking classes. Then they wil realize that you mean buiseness, and that you have a passion. Do you think your parents would ever make fun of something you are currently doing and you really love?

Hi...I'm a film writer/director.

Perhaps a more realistic immediate goal should be explored.

You sound young.
If you're "big" (as you say), perhaps dedicate some time to eating better and working out a little.

Also, there's nothing more important than SECURITY.
Get on a path that leads you to finacial and personal security!
You say you "just get by", and barely have enough money for clothes. Ask yourself if you want to live like this for the rest of your life? Wouldn't you rather have a steady income someday?

Persue a realistic career (Nursing, Paralegal, Managment) and play around with acting on the side. (Local theater...etc...).

Take it from me...EVERYONE wants to be famous.
VERY FEW GET TO BE.

Dream. But with your feet on the ground.

Don't live out your life struggling...like your parents.

FIND SECURITY!

Find a college nearby that offers a film/ acting curriculum and see if they have a student aid / grant / scholarship program. The best way to show you are serious is to study acting. This will get you around others who are also interested and can give you some guidance. If you have to work to pay your way through school, so be it. Many people do it. If it's your passion, go for it. You can do it. Good luck.

Save yourself some heartache. Apply yourself to a lifetime role in something few women enter. Be one of dozens instead one of thousands. Learn technical skills. Being smart, pretty, and tough can put you ahead faster than waiting for your turn to be exploited by those only interested in obtaining your money or
body for illicit purposes. I suggest seeking employment in law enforcement or corrections. Be the 'man'. Act the part.
