Humanity has been trading goods for millions of years. Ideas and knowledge spread through trade even before we had language skills. We would stop advancing as a race if we stopped interacting and sharing the knowledge we gain. You can't expect certain countries who live off selling and trading cash crops like tobacco and coca leaves to suddenly grow their own variety of foods, they don't have the right knowledge or conditions.

It is said that God has given two hands and two feet to the human being for producing/earning sufficient food for self. Even then a large chunk of the population has to go to bed without proper food. The reasons for this may vary but somewhere the situation prevailing in the country also becomes responsible. Basically, all the country want to become self sufficient in food and basic necessity , but situations can reverse the objectives. These situations may include large population, less cultivatable land, traditional farming methods and less productivity of the land etc. But, in today's time of Scientific progress all these problems can be taken care of and attempts made to achieve the goal. There is a great need of adjusting a balance between cultivatable land and Industrial areas or newly coming up concept of Special Economic zones. As far as possible, Agricultural land should not be talen away for industrial / SEZ . In fact, coming up of new concepts can help in developing less fortunate areas of desert, hilly terrains and other such areas.
Therefore, each and every country should try ot achieve self-sufficiency in food and basic necessities by adopting newr methods of farming, crop variations, irrigation and other productivity improving methods.
