Answering my own question…While there’s nothing to be ashamed of our own culture, if you want to live in this country it is fundamental that you learn how to contribute. Hispanics were here before anybody else (except for the Native Americans), but if you want to have a voice you better learn English.

The United States still is a place where you can succeed on your own. If you are willing to come here to live with prosperity, the least you can do is to learn how to communicate (well, unless you live in Miami). You can do it without disposing of any of the things that make you proud of the place you came from, but be ready to throw the bad things in the garbage, respect the laws and be thankful for the opportunity (well, I really hope you have disposed of the bad things away before coming here, right?). Hablas Ingles? No? Well, what the hell are you waiting for?

It is absolutely important because it is completely to their advantage to learn English. It is the primary, foundational language in this country (not to mention the current lingua franca--used throughout the world). The constitution of America was written in English. Everything here is primarily done through the use of English: academics, laws, politics, industry, you name it. Also, if employers start hiring service workers who can't speak clear and fluent English, it can certainly be a problem.

The people who say "I can't stand immigrants because if they come to this country they should at least learn English" aren't getting the right point across.

Well, I believe they should learn English for a more fundamental reason. I was a team leader on a removal team once. I had a few Hispanics on my team. Well, there was a dangerous situation I shouted at them to get out of the way, but he didn't understand what I was saying. So, I had to run and basically knock him out of the way before he was hit by the front loader.

In situations like that, a lack of English can be a dangerous thing.
