I have heard from so many people that it is okay to put oatmeal in the baby's bottle before bed- they say it helps the baby sleep longer. I have also heard some conflicting advice about this- saying that they're not able to digest it. Does anyone do this? Or have any aversion to it?

NO WAY. You should never put anything in a bottle apart from milk. A one month old is not ready for solids. You are supposed to get up and feed your baby when it is hungry that is part of being a parent. Babies don't usually start sleeping threw the night until 4 or 5 months so get used to it. It is very dangerous i would never do it. It was something that they did a long time ago they put rice cereal in their bottles it is a big no no.

my doctor told me that they are told to tell you that babies an digest stuff properly at 4 months they don;t tell you when to start but its anywhere from 4-6 months our parents used to put cereal in our bottles but has since been proven bad obviously its not gonna cause any serious harm we are fine but its not healthy your giving your baby stuff that their body can't digest so its just turning into unhealthy fat or blocking them up just wait cereal does not have half as much nutrients in it as breastmilk or formula so your basically cutting down your baby's nutrients that they need that is why they suggest this i hope you can wait it is exciting but i think it is also unsafe just for the fact that its to thick to go through a nipple so you'd have to poke bigger hole and thats a chokign hazard too and unsafe for soo many other reason have fun and enjoy them while they are so easy eventually later on they will get used to having food at a certain time and scream if they don't get it it is such a treat!!!!

1 month is way too young for solids. It is okay that a 1 month old is not sleeping through the night (or even for long periods of time). Their bodies need that constant nutrition. Trying to get a baby to go long periods of time without food will put their body into a feast-starvation cycle. This contributes greatly to obesity. You aren't ever supposed to put cereal in their bottles. A dr told me this was one of the leading causes of obesity. A baby will continue sucking on a bottle with stuff in it, even if he/she is not hungry, whereas with just milk, they will stop when they are full. I have been told that food in the bottle is equivalent to letting your child suck down a bowl full of ice cream.

edit: of course, if your doctor tells you to do it, that is different.

you can ask your doctor, but honestly it should be fine. thats when i started my daughter, she was just very hungry and not sleeping well. just start off slow and only give it to her before bedtime, then move to giving it to her at bed time and for breakfast, and eventually you can give it to her in every bottle, she reached that at about 3 months. and don't give her the oatmeal kind, use the single grain rice cereal. also to help with digestion you can give her a bottle of sugar water, or prune apple juice. alot of people say only formula till 6 months but that is ridiculous, a baby needs to eat, would you get full off of a liquid? and babies need water for their digestive system. just do it slowly and she will adjust to it. Good Luck!

My dr recommends putting rice cereal in the babies bottle if they have reflux. It may cause constipation, because they are not able to digest it as well as formula or breastmilk - or so that is what everyone says.

My daughter had rice cereal at 2 weeks old. she is almost 7 now and she is fine and she needed it. My son is 2 months old and doesn't need it. it depends on your child. My daughter ate the cereal from a spoon though, not in the bottle.

When we were babies we all had it, I'm sure. Ask your parents if you had it, I bet you did.

You should absolutely NOT feed your 1 month old oatmeal! Babies who are fed food or cereal too quickly develop alergies to certain things. It will not make the baby sleep longer, it will probably constipate the baby, which will make his belly hurt, which will ultimately make him stay awake longer. I would not feed cereal until 6 months old and then you should start with rice cereal and gradually go to oatmeal.

No no no!...its just like saying" since I'm a teen can i have sex now" no you have to let the baby get use to eating the real food than the food we eat its too strong for the baby when you think it isn't..trust me..feed your baby the baby baby food Gerber..and when your baby is like 5 or 6 months older its body will be stronger and more able to do more things ok

The books that I have read said not to feed anything but formula or breast milk, however I recall when our now seven year old was only a month old we mixed a small amount of cereal in with his formula. It seemed to us that he was never satisfied with just the milk and after we introduced cereal he slept longer and seemed to be more satisfied. It was my grandmother that actual suggested we do that she said that is what she had done as well.
