Yes, because America isn't quite ready for openness.
We all want to say we are ready.
I am open to it.
But still, America is in the early stages of acceptness.
Heck, America is still racist and it's been 200 years and they still aren't ready.
But hopefully one day all will be accepted and equal.

It depends. If he was a starter or even a star who helped your team win, how could you root against him? There have been gay NFL players (so far they've only come out after they retired) and surely there are gay players playing now.
It depends on the area. I imagine a gay player in New York (where I live) would have an easier time than a guy in Kansas City, Green Bay, Carolina or other more conservative places.
I wouldn't stop rooting for a guy or the Giants if one of their players was openly gay. If he's a part of the team than I'm rooting for him, barring heinous criminal activity (otherwise known as being on the Bengals) or some other egregious breach of trust and morality. As you can imagine, I'm a gay-friendly straight guy so I don't put homosexuality in the "bad" moral column.

Maybe if the player wasnt very good, but if a star player comes out as gay, I dont think people would care. I mean I think that any fan who has any knowledge of the game, would judge a player by what he does on the field, not what he does on his own time.

No. In today's game, most players go from team to team. Very few fan's loyalty follow the player instead of the team. They may not like the player, but they will still support the team.
Case in point... many Eagles fans hated TO. They were still loyal to the Eagles while he played. It is all about winning. If he helps them win, they will support the team.

I doubt many people would even care. Football is more of a team sport than basketball, and single players do not get the attention that they do in basketball. I'm sure it would dominate the national news media for a week though.

Sadly I think it might, I'm sure there are many players in the NFL that are openly gay with thier teammates and coaches, and just choose not to be with the media

honestly if there were any gay players in the NFL currently. They most likely would not come out until they were retired

No..in the NFL all that really matters are wins and losses.
As long as the team is winning people will love them gay-straight-black-white- handsome or ugly.
Just win baby.

If he played for the San Fransisco Forty Niners and played the Tight End position, he would be very popular and draw a huge amount of local fans!!!!!!!
