why do some peoples avatars on yahoo answers look like a cracked/ripped photo?

I don't have a clue, but I just wanted to say that it's not a dumb question. I usually see more stupid questions than good ones. Actually, this is one of the good ones because I want to know too.

Not only do they think it looks cool but in some graphics, it provides the extracneious border. I might have spelled extracneious wrong.
