Hey all, I'm taking a college course on mythology and legends and was wondering what urban legends freaked you out (either as a child or as an adult). Since all myths and legends vary from telling to telling, please describe how the legend was told to you....thanks for your time!

I know this is untrue, but every time I see a driver with his or her headlights off when they should be on (either when it's raining or at night), I flash my lights at them to signal them. Then I automatically think about the urban myth that if you flash your headlights at a gang pledge who has his/her headlights off, he/she will come after you to kill you as part of a gang initiation. I always get a little anxious, even though I know it's irrational. I can't even remember when I first heard about it!

No way! Urban legends are 99% fabrication. There may be some underlying truth in many of them, but the accounts built around them have become so outrageous, that all that remains is a preposterous anecdote only able to sway the most impressionable minds. Sure, some make nice campfire stories, but c'mon people! Wake up and smell the fresh napalm in the morning. Newspapers are filled with calamities, and those ARE real. I don't believe we need stories to remind us we can die one day or the other, in any which way. If there's a lesson to be learned, please do. But I wouldn't take a cue from any legend, ever, unless there was popcorn involved ;-) Instead, may I suggest that, next time, you take a look at yourself in the mirror and... smile for a change! Cheers!

well, one of mine was the cucuy, which is the latino version of the boogeymonster, does that count?

another one was the chupacabras, i heard that one on the news as a child, eating goats and cows, sucking them of their blood.

lastly, the snake coming out of the toilet.
