Even fish in an aquarium can't suppress their natural instincts. And small fish in open water often find sheltered, hidden spots to sleep to avoid being eaten by larger fish, getting swept away by a current, etc. So it's perfectly natural that your fish should want to find a small safe spot to sleep in. :)

I suppose so. I can only speak from my own experience; I have a goldfish who sleeps in a coffee cup, and, otherwise, seems quite normal and healthy.
Not that sleeping in a coffee cup isn't normal, or healthy, it's because I'm too cheap to buy an artificial reef, or a piece of plastic driftwood from the pet shop.
I'll give points to the fish for being flexible, and adaptable.

Betta are very territorial and find the weirdest spots to call home. I once had a gargoyle (sp?) ornament, and the betta used to sleep inbetween the wings. Now he sleeps in some barrels and gets pissed when my mollies go snooping around in there.

it depends what type of fish it is if its a gold fish i wouldnt say its "normal" i would say u have the coolest gold fish around and u better watch out because im going to go to ur house and steal him... or her =\ =] but betta fish are very different from one another and so i would say that ur betta fish is kool and yet still normal!! but.. if ur betta fish never comes out of its shell check the shell for video games and tvs to make sure ur betta doesnt become a lazy one or is.. dead XD

Bettas like small spots to hide out and rest, where they'll feel safe.

I think it is okay.....some fish are very shy, and like to have a place to hide in.

bettas are territoral and your little guy has adopted the shell as his territory. its fine. he is happy in his shell even if it looks a little weird to you.

The ligth you have on him may be to harsh for night, so he hides from it, or he may just feel safer hidden.
