High traffic areas really shouldn't be carpeted in the first place. After that fact, you are on a downhill slide of how to handle the problem.
If the carpet is not yet chosen, pick one that is mottled neutrals, so it is already blotchy and the color patches could be anything from in the carpet already to grape juice. Get stain resistant carpeting. Pile I'm not sure on here, I'm thinking that a loop or berber is most durable but once something gets in it it's hard to get out. Shag is fuzzy at the end which seems like it would be more absorbant place to pick up stains, but it is easier to get them from underneath. Of course, even blotting up the worst spill very well on the surface is going to have stains that reoccur from the padding.
If your carpet is NEW don't mess with it much but vacuum regularly and protect it with ideas mentioned below. You don't want to steam clean much or use spot cleaners because these mess with the built in stain fighters, waterproofers, etc, meaning they dissolve and do not replace them. These products also leave residue to attract and make dirt stick to the carpet fibers.
If your carpet is already heavily treated with such topicals, then you have no choice but to replace the carpet or keep using them all over in a steam machine, or as a spot treatment. Best strategy I can offer is to use only the best. Maybe even a professional formula from a janitorial supply store. Office supply stores sometimes have things like this...I'm sure warehouse places and home improvement centers do too.
If you are looking at ways to treat your carpet well so it doesn't get as dirty there are all kinds of preventions.
Only water allowed in this area...or specify foods allowed like air popped popcorn. One thing to consider is alternative drinks in that room:
white instead of red cranberry juice
white instead of purple grape juice and wine
seltzer or clear sodas instead of colas, root beer and Dr Pepper.
Dye free Koolaid type things...or lemonade.
Take off shoes.
Put carpet squares down for placemats when eating.
Put plastic mats under office chairs to keep from rolling on bare carpet.
Use coasters and slider helps when moving furniture.
Use area rugs on the most high traffic areas and under dining tables or crafting areas, directly in front of the couch, etc

Use a big area rug with other small rugs and runners. Keep food and drinks in only one area of that room, like the table. Always have guests and family remove shoes before entering. Thats what I do, and my carpet is always clean and my whole house is full of multi purpose rooms. Good luck to you.
