Well, if all you want is something that makes some noise when there's people around, you could probably get a wireles system and install it yourself for cheap. I guess since it's all one room, a door contact and a few window contacts (with break sensor!) would be all you need. You might ask about a motion sensor, but unless you can aim it so you won't set it off it's not much use to you.

If there's a radio shack around, they might have some pretty basic stuff that'll do what you want, and since it's wireless, it'll be easy to pack up and take with you if you move.

Of course, you should realize that an alarm is only good when the burglar is in your home, and is no substitute for quality locks on doors and windows, and having your possessions marked.

a deadbolt mechanical lock for any outside door and magnetic contact alarm for doors and windows. Easy to install. When the contact is broken (window opens after it's been set) alarm sounds.

Check your local Home Depot store. I think you will find them in aisle 10 or 11.

Are you looking for something for when you are in your apartment or out of it?

If you are looking for something you protect you while you are in your apartment, I suggest a door stop alarm.

I have two examples under $20 below. From what I can tell they average around 15-20 each.
