American English and British English are radically different. They are still mutually intelligible, but that doesn't minimize the differences.

For instance, here in America, we call it a "truck" while the British call it a "lorry". Here in America, a "f@g" is a really rude term for a gay person - over in England, a "f@g" is a cigarette (note to British tourists, if you want a cigarette in New York City, do NOT tell somebody that you 'fancy a f@g'!!!! Depending on what part of town you're in you might get punched in the face or kissed on the mouth!!!)

[Notice that Yahoo Answers won't even let me write the word "f@g" since it's a homophobic slur here - while over in England it's an innocuous slang term for cigarette!!!]

Americans put "tires" on our cars, British people use "tyres", some Americans go to work as "laborers" some British people have jobs as "labourers". American cars have "hoods" and "trunks" British cars have "bonnets" and "boots".

And, of course, some Americans are "soccer fans" while many British people are "football supporters" (and what we call "football" is totally different from your "football" which is our "soccer")

And I could go on - over time, our languages are getting more and more distinct.

English throughout the USA is different. English throughout the UK is different. English across the world is different.

Spanish in Spain is not the same as Spanish in Puerto Rico, Mexico, Cuba...or any other Spanish speaking nation.

The english I speak being raised in SC is different from the english my cousins speak in MI.

Of course, it's different.
