Timeliness. When to take the order, when to deliver the food, when to ask how everything is, when to clear the dishes, etc. Eating out shouldn't be rushed nor should paying customers have to wait too long.

1 a smile when you come to the table
2 a drink within 4 minutes of seating/ordering it
3 a quick offering of the specials
4 take the meal order and ask if there are questions
5 serve the meal and then let me munch
6 ask if the meal is good-one time-after I have had a moment of eating
7 leave me alone while I'm eating but look at me now and again-if I need something I will wink at you-I WILL NOT flag you down rudely
If you accomplish 1-7
-smile and say thank you as I leave a 20% tip
tip= to insure prompt service!!!!
Sure there will always be the rude people -just do your best with them!!!!!

I would have to vote for sincerity. I like it when they say hello and ask how I am. A lot of servers just stand there and expect you do say everything...why did I come out in the first place then?

They have to be polite and friendly for one thing. Also, someone who stops by occasionally to make sure that everything is satisfactory. Then there's timely service in regards to the time between when the meal is served and when the bill is presented and the payment is collected.

I want someone who pays attention to what needs to be done. I like someone who is friendly but not too friendly ( I have had servers who have sat down next to me to take the orders. Dont like too much.) I also like someone who is knowledgeable about what is on the menu.

I like how the server who always comes and refills the drinks and ask if i don't need anything. I don't have to ask. That is even though they seem to be busy.

Sincerity. Nothing's worse than a waiter who obviously would rather be somewhere else.

attention to detail,
a good server never lets your drink run dry,
they always stop back by to make sure everything is good/ do you need anything else to enhance the meal.
A smile always goes a long way as well.

To have them come back occasionally to see if you need anything. What I hate is to have them come back every 3 or 4 minutes. They disturb your meal and your conversation. It's annoying.
