Russia was totally devastated by World War I. As a huge country it could not properly moblize and supply its armies. Its armies were poorly led. Russia's military strength was much inferior to that of Germany and the Central Powers, as well as the Allies. It entered World War I in 1914 to fight Germany, which launched an attack against it. Germany hoped, in its two front war to check Russia on the east, first defeat France and the Allies, and the return to defeat Russia.

This plan came surprisingly close to success, but due to Germany' small size failed. The West however fared much better than the weaker, less industrialized, efficient Russia.
The war caused the Russian tsar to abdicate, and the following Kerensky Democratic government to fall. The Communists then took over. Recognizing how war had put Russia into chaos, Lenin in 1917 and 1918 withdrew and made a peace agreement with the Germans. Lenin lost a lot of land, but the drain of World War I on the Soviet Union ended.

The United States entered the war in April 1917. In summary, our fresh troops did not do a tremendous amount of fighting, but did tip the balance in favor of the Allies over the Central Powers. In late 1918 a blockaded and exhausted Germany sued for peace. A peace treaty was signed at Versailles in 1919.

November (October Revolution- not yet on the Gregorian calender) 1917, 6 months later a minority (Menchvicks) group of radicals calling itself the "Majority-men" under Lenin took over the provisional Government from General Kerensky, killed him and the Romanov Family and started a 5 year long civil war between Red (Communists) and Whites (Royalists and anti-communists).

The US entered in 1917 as well after the Zimmerman Telegram and unrestricted U-boat war-fear had cost the US millions in treasure and countless lives.

The Russian Revolution led to confusion among the soldiers as to who was in charge and so the army became very ineffective. on March 3, 1918 Russia signed the treaty of Brest-Litovsk and officially ended hostilities in WWI as well as ceded vast amounts of territory to the Central Powers.

A little correction. Kerensky was not killed at the time. He fled to South America and many years later was assasinated by kgb agent.
