Most wore button down wool coats and wool pant. Wore pushed down hats called kepis. Officers uniforms were more fancy than run-of-the-mill soldiers. Union soldiers wore dark blue uniforms and confederates wore gray or powder blue. Union had black boots, confederates often went barefoot. Artillery had red stripes down their pant legs, cavalry had yellow trim along their coat and pants, and sharpshooters had green coats. The carried a big pouch called a haversack slung over one shoulder, and their cartridge box and canteen over the other shoulder.

The uniforms of the Civil War helped distinguish between the Union soldiers of the North, and the Confederate soldiers from the south. But early in the war, uniforms were provided by states, towns and wealthy individuals. This resulted in a confusing variety of styles and colors on both sides. Over time, blue became the official color for the North and gray for the Confederate uniforms.

Absolute best reference source for this question is the 3 volume Time-Life series titled "Illustrated History of the Civil War.' Volume 1 is "Arms and Equipment of The Union." Volume 2 is "Arms and Equipment of the Confederacy." Volume 3 is "Illustrated Atlas of the Civil War."
You can find this set on Ebay. That's where I got it.
