You don't need anything in this life. However, without a degree, you are going to have a difficult time even getting your columns looked at. If you want to be seen as a serious writer, you need some serious work on your craft. Of course, you could always start your own magazine or newspaper.

No, but it would help if you want to be taken seriously. I am sure there are plenty of great writers who lack the degree, but make up for it with talent and passion.
