The area of California I live in (By San Francisco and Sacramento) the "in" stores for guys are Abercrombie and Fitch, Hollister, Aeropostle, and American Eagle. I think the clothes sold there are very attractive on guys.

Where I live (in Southern California) most guys wear designer jeans, mostly True Religions, and cool T-shirts, you know the ones with like paint splattered and intricate designs, but those can run you upwards of $100. You might want to try shirts like that from surfer or skater brands, they will cost less. As for shoes, old school styles are in, including Pumas. Also, velcro Vans are very popular.
